The social determinants of health under debate with Eduardo Menéndez
The researcher Eduardo Menéndez gave the lecture "Social determinants (conditioning): theory and knowledge" at the Arxiu d'Etnografia de Catalunya, at the Catalunya Campus of the Universitat Rovira Virgili on September 28, 2023.
The conference "Social Determinants (Conditioning): Theory and Knowledge", by the prominent researcher Eduardo Menéndez, promoted the debate on the role of the anthropologist in the recognition and function of these elements in each of the contexts studied.
Regarding the issue, Menéndez said that "We need to assume that subjects and social groups can identify social conditioning factors that are not those identified by researchers," whether they are social scientists or epidemiologists or public health specialists.
Professor Menéndez is one of the most important international figures in medical anthropology, collective health and social medicine. He is professor emeritus at the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS - Mexico), Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (2009) and the National University of Rosario (Santa Fe - Argentina, 2015), among other distinctions.
The conference, held at the Archive of Ethnography of Catalonia, is the first of a series organized by the University of Barcelona, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the MARC of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili called Joint Seminar on Social Inequalities, Networks, and Health.
