MARC researcher participates in an international study on the side effects of ayahuasca consumption

The researcher José Carlos Bouso participated in an international study, led by the University of Melbourne, Australia, in which the secondary effects of ayahuasca consumption for health are analyzed.

The study, published in Plos Global Public Health, analyzes data from more than 10,000 users of this psychoactive drink and concludes that it causes a series of adverse physical and psychological consequences, although they are usually not serious. The information comes from a global online survey carried out between 2017 and 2019 in which people from 50 countries participated.

"Side effects are normal, such as nausea and vomiting, within an ayahuasca ceremony. Even in some traditional cultures they are sought after because they are considered a purge," José Carlos Bouso told La Vanguardia.
